I was fortunate enough to have an Alfa unaccompanied for the afternoon yesterday with my brother who is looking to change cars.First impressions were that I liked the look from the rear and side but the front was a bit 'flat'. The bodywork could benefit from some flaring that the m3 has. Interior wise the seats were nice, the steering wheel was superb (about 2/3rd the size of the m3) - unfortunatley I didn't get a pic of it. Typical of Alfa some of the interior materials were a bit cheap - glove box and arm rest and the leather was not as supple and of the same quality of the m3. The switchgear felt fine though and much much better than the switchgear in the 4C that was in the showroom.Startup sound was nice - not lairey and quieter than the m3 cold start. I started as a passenger and on the move the ride was comfy (the comfort setting of the dampers was more comfy than the m3). The engine was quiet with a nice burble and the drivetrain smooth. The 'I drive' screen was good and shared similarities with the m3 but with less menus and customisation - particularly around the drive settings. The dampers could be adjusted independently but everything else was fixed to a selector wheel labelled d, n, a and race. 'a' seemed to be an eco mode, 'n' may be normal? and 'd' I'm guessing dynamic. We had it in d to begin with.Once warm and out of town the power was very impressive and effortless. The engine and drivetrain were superb! - The engine revved freely and linearly with much more grunt above 3k rpm and to the red line with zero lag. It felt less torquey lower down than the m3 which seemed to aid traction. The gearbox is an 8 speed auto (non DCT) and I was super impressed with it. The speed of the change was excellent and I honestly couldn't tell the difference between the speed of that and the m3 DCT. The changes were smooth with no shove between gears. Under load the exhaust gave out a loud bang on each gear change which was quite entertaining. At this point I was neither overwhelmed or underwhelmed by the car. All was nice but it felt a little too refined that what I was expecting. There was no drama and just 'went'.Soon it was my turn behind the wheel and as soon as I set off the immediate thing I noticed was the steering....... oh my word it is excellent! - the rack is much faster than the m3 and the feel lighter but you just felt connected. The turn in and response is the best I have experienced on any car (with the Porsche 997 been second to it) - it makes the m3 feel numb and heavy!. Coupled to the small steering wheel I could not take the smile off my face. The car felt so light and nimble and gave the impression of a small sports car. I then took the opportunity to put the car into 'race' and the result was a revelation - suddenly the exhaust note lifted as the additional valves opened (similar to sport/sport+ in the m3) but with so much more excitement - the noise was sublime with little cracks and pops on overrun even at low revs. I noticed that 'race' turned off all of the driver aids too and with 500+ bhp I was cautious. I joined a duel carriageway and the noise was awesome! (Made me realise how synthetic the piped sound to the stereo is in the m3) - the car stayed in auto and was overriden when you use the paddles, but it returns into auto if you don't use the paddles for 15-20 seconds (this could be annoying) but even in auto and not driving hard it blipped the throttle and downshifted as soon as the engine dropped below 3k rom when coasting which was great fun (compare it to sport+ setting with the gearbox in D3 but then add 50 - 100%) - it was an absolute beast, and then came the traction. It puts the power down so well. There was a small squirm on full throttle in second but so progressive, but then it just squatted and off it went!. It was much much better than the m3 and so much more composed. The gear box links with the engine so well and doesn't unsettle the car under load like it can in M2 or M3 mode in the m3.All in all I really enjoyed the car, although if I had not discovered race mode I would have been much less enthusiastic. As a result I have disconnected the active sound on the HK amplifier in the m3 as it sounded terrible when I got back in the car - this has made things better and more natural in my opinion.Pros:Steering - i can't emphasise this enough - it is excellent.GearboxTractionSpeed (I would guess it is 10-20% quicker in a straight line when rolling than the m3)Feels like a sports carConsQuality of some materialsDepreciation (I'm guessing this will be horrendous)Lack of ability to customise settings - would be great to have the exhausts in 'loud' mode without engaging race.If I was in the market to buy, this car would give me a big headache. My head would be wanting this big time!! - if you get change it is well worth an extended test drive, and the use of 'race' mode is a must!
